Chiropractic and Osteopathy
Chiropractic is a non-surgical musculoskeletal specialty with a focus on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of biomechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system.
Chiropractors provide care in the conservative management, rehabilitation and performance optimisation of neuromusculoskeletal system for athletes and the general population to participate in a multi-disciplinary sports injury care environment.
Chiropractors receive 5 years full time combined University Undergraduate and Postgraduate training, ensuring their methods are delivered in the safest possible manner. As with other medical professionals, further postgraduate studies and research are completed annually.
The Sports Medicine Institute chiropractic team treats the complete individual in light of their condition. They consider how their diagnosis affects the function of the person, their nervous system and general health.
Treatment may include:
We use a number of highly effective adjusting approaches to help improve spinal biomechanics and reduce nervous system interference. We use both manual methods and low force techniques, always involving you in the treatment, explaining what your condition is, and how it can be managed with a combined approach of patient comfort, evidence based practice and practitioner recommendations.
Soft tissue techniques
Soft tissue techniques are also performed to inhibit overly active muscles. These may include Trigger Point Therapy, muscle releases and Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Management (IASTM) techniques such as Graston® and FAKTR®.
IASTM is particularly effective at breaking down adhesions in fascia and realigning scar tissue, so that healthy healing can now take place. Treatments therefore always include rehabilitation and motor reprogramming. They are dynamic and fun and tailored to the patient’s sports specific or functional needs.
Depending on your condition, we may also choose to utilize rigid or kinesio taping, ice or heat therapy, nutritional advice, exercise prescription and/or referral or co-management with one of the other healthcare providers at Specialist Sports Medicine Centre.
