The SMI team is headed by Practice Principal Dr George Pitsis who has over 25 years? experience as the physician for many elite sporting teams and has been involved in numerous Olympic and Commonwealth Games. Dr Pitsis is the current Chief Medical officer of the Cronulla Sharks NRL team and was involved with the team in this capacity in 2016 when they won their first premiership title.

Under the guidance of Dr Pitsis, Sports Medicine Institute has put together a program to help maximise the performance of both elite and amateur athletes.

Appropriately named SMI Sports Performance Program (SSPP), our team will provide a wholistic approach to your care.

So, who should you see first?

Your initial appointment should be with one of our Sport and Exercise physicians.

The Sport and Exercise Physician will take a detailed history, perform a thorough physical examination, and order any tests/investigations required. As a specialist, Sports Physicians they are able to organise for your MRI scans to be bulk billed, potentially saving you hundreds of dollars.

Depending on the clinical findings and results of the tests ordered by our Sport and Exercise physician, you may be directed to the appropriate Allied Health Professional for biomechanical assessment. This may be with a Physiotherapist, Exercise Physiologist, Podiatrist or a combination of more than one.

Other appointments may also be made with other members of our team including:

Sports Scientist

Sport specific testing, movement screenings, injury prevention plus corrective exercise prescription, strength and conditioning, and program design and monitoring

Dietitian

to help with body composition, strength, performance and recovery goals

Performance Psychologist

to manage nerves and build confidence, performance, and help you be your best

To further set us apart from other sports performance clinics, Sports Medicine Institute has its very own fully equipped sports science-based gymnasium.

When under the care of Sports Medicine Institute, the gymnasium will be utilised by your practitioner during consultations (where appropriate) and is available for use by the patient independently from their health care provider during rehab.

Our gymnasium is available to use 7 days per week for a low monthly membership fee and provides a clean, professional and safe training environment for all members.

To ensure specialised care, Sports Medicine Institute can provide tailor made packages to suit each individual athlete?s needs.
